This 3 day Riso School includes

What will I learn?
You’ll learn the basics of riso-printing, how to prep digital files for riso, how to make reproductions of your photography and original art in both CMYK and custom color profiles

Who is this for?
For both beginners who want to get a crash course in Riso-printing as well as those who want to refine their skills.

What should I bring?
Please bring your laptop. Photoshop is mandatory for this workshop series. Additionally you can work with your program of choice.

What do I take home?
You will make tests and small prints in each workshop segment. At the end, you get to make one 4 color poster in A3 with the colors and technique of your choosing.

 

Detailed Schedule

Day 1

Learning Objectives:
- Introduction to Risography and brief history
- restrictions and possible outcomes
- getting to know the machine and its parts
- testing different analogue scanning modes
- creating analogue artworks using collaging, cut-out and object-scanning techniques
- Halftones vs. Graintouch
- intentional and accidental layering of artworks, inks and paper colors

Practice Project:
You will create a series of prints in A4 and A3 which will be folded into a collaborative zine. You will take home your tests and one individual zine.

Day 2

Learning Objectives:
- working with Photoshop and Indesign for Riso
- Spot colors vs. Layers
- exporting files
- scanning modes in the printer’s software
- sending files from the printer’s laptop
- trouble-shooting errors in print-files

Practice Project:
You will create an A5 print with 3 colors in an edition of 5.

Day 3

Learning Objectives:
- CMYK vs. RGB
- the color palette of Riso
- characteristics of different inks
- Faux CMYK reproduction
- lpi and angles
- custom color profiles
- post-color-separation editing

Practice Project:
You will create a small leporello with a series of 5 images in an edition of 5 and one collaborative test-poster.

Final project
After the Riso School, you will have two weeks to put your new Riso-designing skills into practice, within which you may send us files for an A3 Print in 4 colors of your choice that we will print for you in an edition of 30.
