Four evening classes
22.10., 29.10., 05.11., 12.11. from 5-7pm.
Max. 8 participants
In this class, we will learn the basics in bookbinding: how to fold, sew and glue. We will do a simple three-stitch binding, a french-link-stitch binding and go further from there. You are invited to bring your own ideas and projects into this class and, if you want, develop your own book through the evenings. If you don’t have a project of your own, we will bind a A5 notebook with a hardcover and french-link-stich.
Each evening-class will start with a little bit of technique-teaching, input and inspiration. Then there will be time to discuss questions and to work on your own project.

Tag 1 / THE IDEA
We discuss the different projects that you bring, talk about the best way to bind it and look for materials and inspiration. You will get a short introduction into the workshop and the machines and materials we will work with.
Tag 2 / THE THREAD
Which binding is best for my project? Together we'll bind a pamphlet by using the simple three-stitch binding and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of cross-stitch binding compared to coptic binding. We'll begin folding and binding our own projects / notebooks. In doing so, we'll learn how to measure and plan, and how to work with thread and needle.
Tag 3 / THE GLUE
Spine, endpapers, and cover: Let’s talk about adhesives and application methods. We will glue the spine of your books and build the hardcover. You’ll learn how to take measurements, how to apply glue and work with bookbinding-cloth.
TAG 4 / THE COVER
On the last day of the workshop, we'll finalise your book and do last adjustments. You’ll have time to individualise your cover or decorate it with various materials such as foil embossing, cloth-ornaments or charms. In the end we'll have a small presentation of the finished works.
