Are you tired of standard rectangle books that just open in the regular way? Do you want your zine to be a bit extravagant or experimental in its form? Have you been searching for the perfect notebook, tailored to your bespoke needs? Then join Lauria for a month of evening classes, learning the basics of bookbinding and how to design unique forms for your zine, book, or stationery project. We’ll look at wacky binding methods, unusual materials and unnecessary ornamental embellishments, tailored to your project fantasies.

Participants should bring a book project idea, wish, or inspiration to prototype and develop over the four classes.

Schedule

Materials & Form
May 5th, 6-8pm
Class introductions; everyone presents their project ideas and then we pick out materials and discuss book sizes.

Folding & Sewing
May 12th, 6-8pm
Pamphlet binding, slot binding, stab binding—how to fold or sew a book! We explore different combinations of binding structures.

Glueing & Casing
May 19th, 6-8pm
Sticky fingers and hardcovers! We’ll discuss the basics of using glue in bookbinding, how to make a hardcover case for your book (or other protective covers).

Ornamenting & Finishing
May 26th, 6-8pm
Final cutting processes and adding embellishments to your book like foil embossing, etiquettes and charms, plus a presentation of everyone’s projects and last reflections.
